The World Smiles Back
2017
Genre: Documentary
Role in Films: Writer, Director, Editor, Sound Designer
This is the full documentary I completed for my Senior Project in High School. For the documentary, I chose to focus to my own brother, Benjamin, who was diagnosed with autism at two years old. This gave the documentary a very personal tone, as my parents and I had the ability to detail our firsthand experiences with raising Benjamin. Being in a variety of film classes in high school, I had the opportunity to do various types of films, ranging from short comedy skits to full animations with fictional characters. Up until this documentary, I hadn't worked on a film with such a serious tone, let alone a feature-length duration. The documentary took around seven months to complete, in which I learned many of the basic principles of making a good documentary and how to organize information throughout a film to keep interest. The film was even featured on Autismspeaks's official website.
I chose this film to be a centerpiece of my website because I view it as one of my biggest accomplishments. I took all the necessary steps in pre-production, production, and post-production to create this film in under seven months for my High School Graduation project. The biggest part of this documentary for me was the editing. I had hours of footage to condense and work with, and figuring out how to cut multiple interviews to line up and create an invoking story by myself was a huge challenge. This film, in my opinion, will forever stand as not only a testament to the love for my younger brother, but the film that got me started on my film/sound editing career.
